Preventative eye care can significantly reduce the risk of vision loss. However, the cost of eye exams can be a barrier for many. Understanding your provincial vision care coverage can help ensure you receive necessary eye care.

Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP):

  • Under 20 and 65+: Covers annual full eye exams and unlimited follow-ups.

  • 20 to 64: Covers annual exams only with certain medical conditions, and up to two partial exams per year for follow-ups related to those conditions. Individuals on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) are also covered for annual eye exams and related follow-ups.

  • 65+: Covers exams every 1.5 years, with annual exams and up to two partial exams for those with specific ocular conditions.

ODSP: Covers glasses or contacts for those in the program, with frequency depending on age.

For detailed information and to confirm your coverage, visit your province’s health coverage page and ensure your healthcare card is valid and up to date. By understanding your coverage, you can ensure timely and regular eye care for yourself and your family.
